All our Skippers hold at least the Royal Yachting Association Inland Waterways Helmsman’s Certificate (IWHC) or a higher level of qualification.

Our volunteers include professional seamen some of whom hold Master Mariner Certificates of Competence. Volunteers who wish to become Skippers and are not already qualified are given training to the required standard through the RYA training scheme.

Falkirk, Kirkintilloch and Ratho branches are RYA recognised Training Centres where  currently Jim Steel and David McMinn conduct the courses. The course covers all aspects of cruising on Inland Waterways including boat handling, mooring, using locks, navigating tunnels and bridges and other features particular to the branch operations. However the courses are available only to STC Members, they are not offered to the general public. In early 2022 it is hoped to have three more volunteers complete the  RYA IWHC instructors’ course.
